Trail Overview

Shelter Cove Road (section 1) starts where Revilla Road ends at the turn-off to Harriet Hunter Road. This section of Shelter Cove Road is mostly Gravel with very large potholes; airing down for comfort is suggested. The road turns into a smaller one-lane that requires pulling over for passing vehicles. There are quite a few pull-out areas, and in most places, you can pull over on the shoulder for passing vehicles. There are many connecting trails, so always verify whose land you're on and get the appropriate permission if not in Tongass National Forest. This is a scenic hilly road with many areas overlooking George Inlet, beautiful panoramas, 2 new wooden bridges over creeks, lots of rock, trees, shrubs, liken, Moss, and ferns in this area. This road is very hilly with some steep grades. Ketchikan has had its fair share of Landslides lately, so it is good to be prepared and check your surroundings, especially weather conditions. Be prepared for rain, fog with low visibility, and lower temperatures. It is a rainforest. This road is lined with trees and passes through areas of Muskeg. This Island has black bears, so be safety-minded when outside your vehicle. Lots of Deer are seen in this area as well. This road is maintained to a point, and Logging trucks, bridge maintenance, and build vehicles have been seen on this road. Be vigilant, especially on blind corners, as we share the road. It is best to be prepared for land slides on any Island in Alaska, as it takes time for services to get out to the remote areas, or even know about the slide on the back roads. Make sure to have a safety contact with knowledge of your planned location and have a bear-proof bag for survival in case you are stuck on the other side of a landslide.
