Vick Road - FS 412

Trail Overview

FS 412 is a fairly short, well-maintained service road through the Talladega National Forest. Motor vehicle use in the Talladega National Forest is limited to street-legal "plated" vehicles. One of the interesting things about this trail is that it provides access to a public shooting range and also to a nice, designated camping area. Within the Talladega National Forest, camping is not truly dispersed, but rather must be done at a handful of designated primitive camping areas. The trail itself is generally well-graded and cambered. It's hard-packed dirt and light gravel and generally very smooth. It flows gently up, down, and around the hills through a mix of smaller hard and softwood trees. For the most part, it is two vehicles wide, with plenty of room to pass. Near the midpoint of the trail is where the shooting range is located. The camping area is just a bit further down. The spur trail that the campsites are located on, FS 412B / Sandy Creek, seems to have been recently reworked. The campsites seem very nice. They are on what appears to be comfortable, clear ground and on top of a hill, which should have good drainage. It looks like there are about 8 or 9 independent campsites, each of which could support 2 or 3 tents or vehicles. This spur is actually now gated at the end of the campsites. So it's not really a spur trail so much as just a set of campsites off of the main trail. Cell service can be hit or miss, but it's generally decent. There aren't any stores for fuel or food anywhere within the national forest, but there are convenience stores in the surrounding towns. Centreville, which is the largest city in the area, is only 4 miles west.
