Trail Overview

This alternative route has been established to bypass the jarring washboard road leading to La Chorera on the way to Punta Mazo Reserve. By taking the marked fork to the right along the trail, you will immediately find yourself driving on sandy terrain that is easily manageable with a 4WD vehicle and deflated tires. Alternatively, if you have a high clearance 2WD vehicle, you can opt to take the next right and join the same route. The road on this alternative route is firm and smooth, leading you to a left turn that passes through a strawberry (Fresa in Spanish) farm. There is a gate which was open. If you make a stop and approach the security guard, you might have the opportunity to acquire a bag of delicious strawberries. As you continue your ascent and drive above the strawberry farms, the enticing aroma of strawberries fills the air, even with the windows closed. Proceeding between the volcanoes Riveroll and Kenton, you will eventually merge back onto the washboard road for the final and most scenic section of the tourist route to Punta Mazo Reserve, which can be further explored with the detailed information provided below.

Difficulty

Only the initial section of the route will potentially give non 4WD vehicles trouble but that is easily avoidable by taking another right further down the road to avoid this section. If you choose to go onto Punta Mazo Reserve there will be a beach crossing which could be trouble for non-4WD vehicles but a good driver with a high clearance 2WD vehicle and tires that are properly aired down should have no problem.
