Trail Overview
The Backcountry Gateway Trail is a partially graded sandy route that serves as the primary access road from San Felipe to a network of rugged backcountry trails. It's a practical and scenic connector, ideal for staging deeper offroad adventures into the Baja interior. The first 3 miles are mellow, consisting of shallow sand with light washboarding--rated a 1 and suitable for 2WD vehicles. This stretch, sometimes graded, offers sweeping views of the Sierra San Felipe and surrounding mountain ridge lines, setting the tone for the terrain ahead. Beyond the 3-mile mark, the sand becomes deeper and looser, with small to medium whoops formed from recent Baja 250 activity. This section bumps the trail to a Rating 2, where 4WD is recommended for traction and comfort. Airing down is also recommended. Whether you're heading for more technical routes or just exploring the open desert, this trail is a reliable and scenic gateway into Baja's wild backcountry.
