Trail Overview

This trail begins at Highway 1 and quickly ascends, offering several excellent campsites on the right within the first half-mile. After a flat section, the climb becomes steeper, requiring careful wheel placement to navigate deep crevices and loose rock. Once you reach the mesa, the terrain levels out, providing a mile of smooth, flat driving and more inviting campsites along the right. As the descent begins, the trail transitions to rugged, chunky terrain, with stretches covered in baseball-sized stones. This rocky trend continues until the trail connects with the route linking La Purisima to Highway 1 near San Juanico.

Difficulty

This trail is not particularly challenging overall, but it does feature a few sections that demand careful attention. The steep shelf road climb, while only about 100 yards long, includes switchbacks and large crevices that require precise wheel placement. 4WD is highly recommended for this ascent, especially if tire pressure is not significantly lowered. Additionally, the extremely rocky sections benefit from engaging 4WD to maintain traction and control, ensuring a smoother and safer passage through these areas.
