5 Bar Road

Trail Overview

Rocky and slow, 5 Bar Road leads to the 5 Bar Overlook on the rim of the Owyhee Canyon. From this vantage point, you look down into a section of the canyon where the remains of the historic 5 Bar Ranch stand at the confluence of the Owyhee and West Little Owyhee Rivers. This is an out-and-back trip as the private property South of Maher Reservoir is gated and locked with posted "No Trespassing" signs. There is very little traffic out here. Bring extra fuel, water, and spare tires. There is a high silica content in the dirt in this region. When dry, there is a fine talc dust that gets everywhere and in everything. When wet, it becomes a slippery mess and dries hard on your vehicle like concrete. Be prepared to hike out if traveling in this area during the wet season.
