Trail Overview

The Granite Lane Trail begins at the very end of Granite Lane, also known locally as Outback Run. Access this trail by turning onto Granite Lane/Outback Run from North River Road. Note that GPS software labels this road as Granite Lane, but the street signage displays Outback Run. As you proceed, follow all posted signage. Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) must use the bypass to the left. Both the bypass and the main road reconnect near the southern end of Outback Run. The trailhead is straight ahead, where Granite Lane veers to the right. Please be respectful of the Granite Woods Community and Granite Woods Sanctuary. This trail follows an old logging road characterized by hard-packed dirt with sections of exposed rock, small washouts, and large puddles in some areas. Some sections can be narrow, so pinstriping is possible.

Difficulty

The trail features some large, exposed rocks and small washouts, which may require careful tire placement. It is generally manageable for vehicles with moderate ground clearance and off-road capabilities. Drivers should be prepared for uneven terrain and the potential for minor obstacles.

History

While there's no official documentation on the history of the Granite Lane Trail, its characteristics--such as the wide, hard-packed dirt path, scattered exposed rocks, and remnants of old cuttings--strongly suggest that it was once a logging road, likely used decades ago. This is a common origin for many trails in the South Mountain region, where forestry was a significant industry.
