Trail Overview

This 23-mile out-and-back trail takes you to the San Josef Bay area. The San Josef Main is the primary logging road and access route to San Josef Bay, which is a remote but popular destination on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The road is tree-lined, gravel, and just barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass in most areas. This is an active logging road, and logging trucks have the right of way at all times. It's strongly advised to carry and use a radio to call out your kilometer position, especially during weekdays when truck activity is high. Use extreme caution on corners and blind rises, and always yield to oncoming trucks. The route becomes progressively narrower toward the end, where visibility is reduced and passing areas become less frequent. The road surface includes numerous potholes, and during dry weather, it is extremely dusty. Visibility can drop sharply when trucks pass by.

Difficulty

While the terrain itself is not technical, the environmental conditions and traffic risks make this road more demanding in terms of driver attentiveness and safety precautions. Any street-legal vehicle can navigate it, but drivers should be experienced in logging road etiquette and prepared for sudden encounters with fast-moving industrial traffic.

History

San Josef Bay, located on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, has a history marked by Indigenous presence, failed European settlement attempts, and the eventual establishment of Cape Scott Provincial Park. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Kwakwaka'wakw people, including the Quatsino and Koskimo, for thousands of years. European explorers arrived in the late 18th century, but it was the late 19th and early 20th centuries that saw attempts at settlement by European immigrants, primarily of Danish origin, who were drawn to the area by the promise of fertile land and resources.
