Trail Overview
Why take the paved road north to south to Newgate when you can take dirt? The northern section of LinkLater Forest Service Road is a well-graded and wide logging road. Calling ahead on your UHF radio is recommended, but not required, to notify logging operations of your travel. Signs will be posted with the radio frequency and the mile markers to call ahead. Overall, the trail is wide and well-maintained, with some narrow sections further south requiring some reversing to allow for oncoming traffic. There are many offshoots on either side of this main trail with opportunities to explore other trails. Many miles down, there is a nice dispersed camping area. The recreation site is nestled into the valley right next to the trail on the banks of Gold Creek. There's one bar of Verizon service, but it's generally unusable. To ensure you have consistent map coverage, please download your offline maps before exploring the area. Crown Land Camping: Canadian Crown Land is open to Canadian residents for free camping. Out-of-country visitors, particularly from the US, will need to obtain a camping permit from the nearest FrontCounter BC office in Cranbrook before camping on Crown land if camping outside of the paid campsite.
