Trail Overview

Holberg Main Trail is a wide, well-traveled gravel road that links Port Hardy to Holberg, serving as a key corridor for both public and industrial use. This road is three car widths wide, graded, and sees heavy vehicle traffic, including large logging trucks that always have the right of way. Expect frequent washboards, thick roadside brush, and dusty conditions, especially in dry months. Numerous spur trails branch off the main road, though many lead to private property and should be approached with respect and caution. The route passes Kains Lake, the Nahwitti River, and Nahwitti Lake, with dense forests and abundant wildlife including black bear and deer. Drive cautiously to avoid accidents with animals. Pullouts are available throughout the route and should be used to safely allow vehicles to pass or get out of the way of logging trucks.

Difficulty

This is a non-technical gravel road that is well-graded. The biggest hazards are speed, dust, and heavy truck traffic, not terrain. Suitable for all vehicles in dry conditions. Low clearance is okay, but drivers must remain alert and courteous, especially when encountering industrial vehicles.

History

The primary purpose of the road is to provide access to the community of Holberg, which is situated at the western end of Holberg Inlet. Holberg itself is a very small community, with a population that has decreased significantly in recent years. The 2011 census recorded 51 permanent residents, dropping to 35 by 2016 and further to 15 by 2021.
