Trail Overview
Ha Ha Creek FSR offers a quick and scenic ascent from Highway 93 up to the Baker Mountain saddle and its access points. This well-graded, active logging road generally has enough width for two rigs to pass comfortably without stopping, and it easily climbs into the mountains. You'll find plenty of pullouts and places to camp along the way, making it convenient for short stops or overnight stays. As an active logging road, calling ahead on your UHF radio is a recommended safety measure to alert logging operations to your presence. The route passes through many meadows of cleared trees where cows often graze; watch out for them on the road, as this is open range during certain times of the year. While mostly smooth, be aware of occasional narrow sections and a few deep, sneaky potholes that can span the full width of the road. Expect one bar of often unusable Verizon cell service, so having offline maps downloaded is absolutely crucial.

History
The Ha Ha Creek FSR, carving its way through the McGillivray Mountain Range, is a prime example of the Kootenay region's long history of resource extraction. These mountains, part of the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa people for millennia, once supported thriving ecosystems that drew early prospectors during the late 19th-century mining booms. While mining was central, the extensive logging roads, such as Ha Ha Creek FSR, became the lifeblood of timber transportation, shaping the very landscape we traverse today. The "cleared tree" meadows you encounter are direct evidence of past and current forestry operations, which remain an active industry here. Even though removed from Lake Koocanusa, this area echoes the broader region's narrative of development and the ongoing balance between industry and a growing appreciation for the natural beauty it reveals.
