Trail Overview
Grasmere Dorr Road begins as a well-maintained and wide graded road, offering an easy 1 rating start as it heads southwest. As you progress, the trail gradually tightens, increasing to a difficulty of 2 towards its end. The road meanders through picturesque meadows and forested sections before opening up to breathtaking views of Lake Koocanusa. These stunning vistas accompany you all the way to the Dorr Campground, a delightful camping spot offering a tranquil escape without hookups. The Dorr Campground is easily accessible, and motorhomes or RVs can navigate to it without issue. Beyond the initial section of the campground, the road is marked as private, although it continues past the campground, providing access to the OHV and trail system further beyond. A second section of the campground, complete with a boat launch, is located further down the trail. Beyond the boat launch, the trail narrows and becomes heavily forested. Here, you can access several OHV trails, which are best suited for side-by-sides (SXS) and dirt bikes due to their narrow width. The main trail culminates at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Lake Koocanusa. Be aware that the turnaround point at the end of the trail is quite tight and off-camber, suitable for only one vehicle at a time. Camping is limited to the designated Dorr Campground, so be sure to check with the host upon arrival for availability and regulations. Cell service in the Lake Koocanusa area can be intermittent. To ensure you have consistent map coverage, please download your offline maps before exploring the area.

Difficulty
This is a tight, narrow trail in heavily forested trees. Only one vehicle wide for long stretches requires oncoming traffic to back up. The trail surface gets rockier towards the end. The turnaround point is very narrow, with only enough room for one vehicle to turn around and back up a steep off-camber hill.
History
The Grasmere Dorr Road area reflects a history of resource use and recreation. The road itself likely originated as a logging access route, facilitating the removal of timber from the surrounding forests. Over time, the area has transitioned into a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with the Dorr Campground providing a base for exploring the lake and surrounding trails. The Ktunaxa (Kootenai) people have a deep connection to this land, and their presence is a reminder of the area's enduring natural and cultural significance.
