Trail Overview

This segment of Granduc Road runs from the Salmon Glacier lookout east through a glaciated mountain valley to the waypoint at 56.23597, -130.07452. The route follows a wide industrial gravel road with consistent alignment and gentle elevation changes. Under typical summer conditions, the surface is mostly well-graded, with intermittent washboard, embedded rock, and shallow potholes. The road travels through exposed alpine terrain with rock faces, avalanche paths, and glacial runoff near the roadway. Sightlines vary between open valley views and tighter sections with limited shoulders and occasional drop-offs. Pullouts are informal and spaced out, requiring drivers to anticipate oncoming traffic and yield early. While not technical in dry conditions, this is a remote corridor where the weather can change quickly. Fog, rain, or early-season snow can reduce visibility and soften the surface, increasing travel time. Drivers should plan for slow, controlled speeds and be fully self-sufficient for the duration of the route.

Difficulty

This is a wide, non-technical gravel road with gentle grades and no significant obstacles in dry conditions. Washboard, loose gravel, limited shoulders, and oncoming industrial traffic are the primary considerations. Difficulty increases briefly with poor weather or early/late-season snow, but overall driving remains straightforward for vehicles with basic clearance.

History

Granduc Road was originally developed to support access to the Granduc Mine, once a significant copper mining operation in the region. The road remains an important industrial and access corridor and is still used for maintenance and contractor travel. Its existence allows public users to experience otherwise inaccessible alpine terrain, but it should be treated as a working resource road.
