Winding through the heart of the remote Nemaiah Valley, this scenic back road provides direct access to the stunning shores of Chilko Lake via Nu Chugh Beniz Campground. Though officially part of the provincial park system, the road has a wild, backcountry character. This route offers more than just a drive -- it's a wildlife viewing experience. Along the way, you may encounter wild horses, deer, numerous bird species, and occasionally even black bears. The terrain is gentle, though the road is rugged in spots. At the road's end, you'll arrive at the lakeside campground, offering several waterfront sites perfect for an overnight stay. Self-registration is available onsite--be sure to bring cash ($18 per night).

Difficulty

The road is a standard single-lane Forest Service Road (FSR), with a generally wide and navigable profile. While there are potholes, washboard sections, and rough patches, the road remains passable for most high-clearance vehicles under normal conditions. No advanced driving skills are required, but caution is advised.

Access Description

To reach Chilko Lake Road and the Nu Chugh Beniz Campground, begin by heading west along Highway 20. Turn south at the junction with Big Creek Road and follow it deep into the Chilcotin wilderness. After several kilometers, transition onto Taseko Lake Road, which winds its way through forested valleys and along alpine ridges. Continue on this route as it leads you toward Chilko Lake.
