Trail Overview

Rocky and slow, the Maher Reservoir Road scrambles up out of the Three Forks Recreation Area and across Brown Ridge before reaching Maher Reservoir. This road dead ends at a locked ranch gate festooned with numerous "No Trespassing" signs a couple of miles past the reservoir, so this is an out-and-back adventure typically used to access Five Bar Overlook. There is very little traffic out here. Bring extra fuel, water, and spare tires. There is a high silica content in the dirt in this region. When dry, there is a fine talc dust that gets everywhere and in everything. When wet, it becomes a slippery mess and dries hard on your vehicle like concrete. Be prepared to hike out if traveling in this area during the wet season.
