Trail Overview
South Lake winds along the eastern edge of the South Lake village boundary, departing from Juniper Flat and tracing a course through open BLM land with the Sequoia National Forest mountains as a constant backdrop. The hard-packed sand surface is punctuated by rocks and several deep wash crossings that keep the trail engaging throughout. Wildlife is notably active in this corridor. Coyotes and jackrabbits are frequently spotted, making this one of the more scenic and lively trails in the network beyond just the mountain views.

Difficulty
The washes are the defining feature here. Steep banks on entry and exit, combined with ruts and small rock sections, push the trail to a solid Rating 3 despite the otherwise manageable surface. High clearance is needed to navigate these dips cleanly.
