Trail Overview

Starting at the edge of the community of Green Valley Lake, this western approach of FS 3N16 offers a lush, alpine experience markedly different from the eastern desert-transition terrain. The trail winds through dense stands of Jeffrey pine, white fir, and oak, providing a shaded and scenic drive that climbs toward the higher ridges of the San Bernardino Mountains. The route begins at the junction of Green Valley Lake Road and FS 3N16. The initial few miles are characterized by a steady but gradual climb on a graded dirt surface. Approximately 1.5 to 2 miles in, the forest opens up to provide one of the most celebrated vistas on the western end: a panoramic overlook of the Lake Arrowhead basin and the distant San Gabriel Mountains to the west. As the road continues toward the Crab Flats area, the terrain remains relatively smooth but can feature deeper ruts after rain or snowmelt. The road surface is primarily packed dirt with occasional loose gravel. A critical distinction for this segment is that it is Street Legal Only. Non-street legal vehicles (OHVs/Green Stickers) are prohibited on FS 3N16 between Green Valley Lake and the junction with FS 3N34 (Crab Flats). OHV access and staging are restricted to the areas further east.

Difficulty

This segment is a high-altitude, full-width forest road that is suitable for stock high-clearance SUVs and 4x4 vehicles in dry conditions. The trail consists primarily of a well-maintained graded dirt surface, though drivers should expect consistent washboarding and shallow ruts throughout the climb. While technically easy, the difficulty can increase to a 3 or 4 during the winter and spring months. Due to the dense forest canopy and north-facing slopes, this section holds snow, ice, and deep mud significantly longer than the more arid eastern sections of Holcomb Valley.

History

Originally part of the 1890s Bear Valley Wagon Road, the western end of FS 3N16 served as a primary toll route for miners and loggers. This segment once hosted an 11-room toll house near Green Valley Lake and was the terminus for a major logging railroad in the early 1900s. Today, it offers a glimpse into the region's timber history, traversing forests that were clear-cut over a century ago and have since returned to the lush canopy seen today.
