Deer Flat - FS 1099

Trail Overview

The entrance to Deer Flat (FS 1099) is located off Seven Springs Road (FS 24), near the Gateway to Seven Springs area. This is an out-and-back trail featuring a long rock garden climb that zigzags up the hillside. Expect large rocks ranging from 12 to 18 inches throughout the trail. While not highly technical, the trail is rough and steep, and 4WD with high ground clearance is recommended. After climbing the first hill, it's worth stopping and looking back -- the views are impressive. At the top, the trail you will cross the plateau, after passing the first livestock tank, you will find yourself wrapping around the mountain on a steep shelf road that continues down to a second tank. The shelf road section offers one of the best viewpoints on the trail, with incredible views of Horseshoe Lake in the distance and Table Mountain dominating the surrounding landscape. The scenery alone makes the climb well worth it. Livestock are often present on the trail, so drive slowly and be aware. This trail is in the Tonto National Forest, and a permit is required.

Difficulty

This trail features steep hills and rock gardens for nearly 80-percent of the route. It becomes impassable in wet conditions. Rocks up to 12 inches are scattered across the trail and are unavoidable, making for a steady rock garden climb and down a narrow shelf section around the mountain.
