Trail Overview

This is a short singletrack, half a mile long, that drops down from the road (FS 93-002) near the Sierra Buttes Trailhead. It curves down the hillside through a series of easy and wide switchbacks as it weaves through tall mossy pine trees. The trail is clear of any logs and didn't have much rock. It zig zags down a very gradual slope, so there isn't any exposure during the descent. You get a great view of the Sierra Butte and fire tower from the east end of the trail near the parking area. This trail looks less trafficked, but expect to share the trail with mountain bikers. The west end ends on a dirt road that you can take back north to connect to the Pack Saddle Loop Trail.

Access Description

The moto trails in the Tahoe National Forest northeast of Downieville, CA are best accessed from the Packer Lake Saddle or Sierra Buttes Trailhead on Gold Valley Road. It's a steep paved road with a couple dirt parking lots, not ideal for large trailers. Parking is tricky in the town of Downieville with no official staging area, so it's best accessed from the east side of the trail system. These trails are highly popular with mountain bikers as well.
