Trail Overview
South Fork Ahtanum Jeep Trail is best suited for experienced drivers seeking a moderately difficult to challenging 4x4 trail in Washington with technical terrain and sustained ridge travel. Beginning near Red Saddle at the junction of Sedge Ridge Road and Red Saddle Road, this designated ORV route in Ahtanum State Forest runs roughly 9.4 miles out and back, gaining about 1,700 feet as it climbs through forested slopes and exposed ridgelines. The native dirt surface is broken up by loose rock, embedded ledges, and erosion ruts that demand careful line choice, particularly on steeper or off-camber sections where traction drops quickly when wet. High-clearance 4x4 vehicles with low range are recommended, and drivers should expect mixed traffic from ATVs and motorcycles on tighter or blind sections. The trail climbs to the boundary with the Yakima Reservation, which serves as the turnaround, with filtered ridge-top views over the Yakima Valley and surrounding Cascade foothills. Conditions are highly seasonal, with lingering snow into late spring and increased difficulty during wet periods due to slick soil and shifting rock; Washington DNR may implement temporary closures to prevent damage. Expect evolving trail features such as deeper ruts, exposed rock shelves, and occasional downed trees, all within a remote setting with no nearby services. As one of the more technical Jeep trails in Ahtanum State Forest, it requires solid vehicle capability, recovery gear, and awareness of changing terrain.
