Trail Overview
Gas Well Loop (FS 20) is a solid pick for intermediate riders looking to explore southeastern Ohio's Wayne National Forest on an ATV or dirtbike. The loop starts at the Hanging Rock Trailhead and winds southeast through mixed hardwood forest, offering a mix of terrain that keeps things interesting without being overwhelming. The trail surface alternates between dirt and gravel, with loose rock and slick mud common after rain, especially in shaded sections. Expect moderate ruts, occasional water holes, and tight turns through dense woods that demand attention. It's a designated OHV route managed by the Ironton Ranger District and is open seasonally from April 15 to December 15, though the Forest Service may temporarily close it during wet spells to limit erosion. Navigation can get tricky where FS 20 intersects with other loops, so keep an eye on junction markers and your GPS. If you're riding after a wet week, drop your tire pressure a bit and be ready for some extra clutch work--those clay-heavy mud patches can get greasy fast.
