Trail Overview

Telephone Lane is a smaller and more involved trail than others located within the Sandhills Game Lands. The route is primarily a sandy double-track, with the potential for deeper sand, standing water, ruts, and mud depending on the weather and time of year. Seasonal changes or recent prescribed burns can also leave portions of the trail slightly overgrown with stray branches or underbrush. Some sections feature deeper, loose sand, and the most challenging obstacle is a rut approximately 6-8 inches deep. Vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive, appropriate tires, and adequate ground clearance should be able to navigate these areas without significant difficulty. The trail runs mostly through wooded forest, though a few openings and clearings break up the landscape. Wildlife such as turkeys, deer, and various bird species are commonly seen, making the area a great option for sightseeing. While certain stretches can be driven at higher speeds, narrow sections, possible oncoming traffic, and wildlife crossings make caution important throughout the route.

Difficulty

The trail is generally easy; however, the two mentioned sections of loose sand and mild ruts can cause issues for ill-equipped vehicles. The sand should be passable for the majority of vehicles, but it can come out of nowhere, throwing drivers and vehicles off. The ruts are generally noticeable, and taken with an appropriate line, they can mostly be ignored.

Access Description

Access to the trail is located at the western end of Nursery Lane. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, a portion of the trail extends north to Ellerbe Tower Lane; however, this section appears to be heavily overgrown and is likely closed. The trail functions as an out-and-back route, with a single point of entry and exit.
