Trail Overview

This route alternates between gravel and native dirt surfaces, generally single-vehicle wide with periodic pullouts for passing. Four-wheel drive (4WD) is recommended. Portions narrow into a shelf road that winds through tight forest and canyon walls, creating a cool, shaded corridor for much of the drive. Spotty cell service can be expected throughout. A section passes through the 2024 Crozier Fire burn area, where fire-damaged soils may become slick and unstable when wet. Mud, standing puddles, and soft shoulders are common after storms. One segment experienced severe burn impacts and is currently active with logging operations--watch for equipment and truck traffic. Larger water crossings have bridges, though smaller drainage dips may hold water. Staging areas are located at both the beginning and end of the route. Seasonal closures affect several roads originating from Rock Creek, so check posted signage before heading out. Wildlife sightings may include deer, smaller mammals, and the occasional bear or mountain lion. The area also connects with off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails, and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes may cross at designated intersections. Spring through fall offers the most consistent access, while winter storms can bring accumulating snow and temporary closures.

Difficulty

The surface is primarily gravel and compacted dirt, with moderate grades and limited obstacle exposure. While narrow sections and shelf-road segments require attention to placement, they do not demand advanced vehicle capability or recovery equipment. Mud within the burn scar can increase difficulty temporarily, but outside of wet weather, the route remains manageable for most high-clearance 4WD vehicles with basic off-pavement experience.
