Trail Overview
The Snake Creek Trail network encompasses 13 miles of varying terrain and trail conditions that run through the Southeastern Minnesota bluff country. The majority of the external looping trail is considered a one-way track running clockwise. Riders need to ensure compliance with the trail direction signs. There are several cross-connect trails that run mostly north/south that provide for considerable variation in the network. The trail conditions will change depending upon the time of the season, with early-season riders encountering water and mud, while late-season riders will encounter dust and deep ruts. Running through the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest, the wooded trail climbs 300 feet along the Snake Creek Valley with stunning scenic overlooks. Sections of the trail reach the underlying rock formations with sections of embedded rock in the trail. The trail can be accessed from Minnesota 61 via 608th St via Kranz to the general parking area. Or by continuing on 608th to the main entry point, where there is parking, a restroom, a picnic table, and allowed camping. Both Class 1 (50" or less) and Class 2 (50-65") ATVs are allowed, as well as Off-highway Motorcycles (OHM) on the Snake Creek trails. The trail consists mostly of dirt dual track with embedded rocks. Expect lots of water and mud in the May/June timeframe and dusty, dry trails in the early fall before seasonal rains begin. The trail is normally open from 1 May to 31 October for wheeled off-roading and 1 December to 31 March for snowmobiling. This trail is maintained by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. OHV riding in Minnesota requires either a vehicle registered with the state or the purchase of a non-resident OHV state trail pass. Nearest services are located in Kellogg.
