Jack Dent Road

Trail Overview

This easy gravel road is part of a remote, rugged backcountry loop that connects forest routes, crossing paths with the Quehanna Trail, a 75-mile hiking path looping through Moshannon State Forest and showcasing its natural and historical resources. It offers a good and relatively quick way back to the paved Quehanna Highway to gain access to civilization at Benezett, Pennsylvania. There are some interesting rock formations along the way and in the Jack Dent Branch of Medix Run that this track follows. There is a bit of a view at the pipeline cut near the north end of the route. There are several hunting camps and cabins along the way.

Typical Pennsylvania forest road. Passable by any street-legal vehicle except after storms or snow.

History

Along with Big Medix Grade Road, this road runs along historic logging routes and railroad grades. Specifically, this trail was cleared in 1893 by the Medix Run Lumber Company for a railroad to haul lumber from the forest. The connecting roads were also part of this extensive railroad that had 70 miles of track and operated five 90-ton, gear-driven Shay locomotives. All the grades were abandoned in 1912.
