Tips for First-Time BoH Trail Drivers
For Jeep owners looking to tackle trails and earn badges, a few suggestions to consider before attempting your first BoH route include:
- Prep Your Vehicle – Make sure your Jeep is in tip-top shape before you go. Tires should be inflated (or deflated) to the desired PSI, fluids topped off, brakes checked, skid protection installed, and any vehicle-specific tools packed. See our off-roading essentials guide for more details.
- Plan Your Route – Download the Jeep Badge of Honor App ahead of time, along with a navigation tool like onX Offroad, and map out your route.
- Pack Rescue Essentials – At minimum, bring a first-aid kit, extra water, overnight supplies like clothing layers and/or a blanket, and a satellite communication device.
- Bring Recovery Gear – Basic items include a winch, tow straps, traction boards, a land anchor, and a shovel—at minimum. For more details on recovery gear, see our off-road recovery guide.
- Travel With a Group – It’s never wise to venture into the backcountry alone. Group adventures allow drivers to spot lines and lend a helping hand if things get tricky.
- Follow Trail Etiquette – Stay on designated trails, don’t shortcut, and be courteous to other trail users. Be sure that what you pack in, you pack out, and “Leave No Trace.”
