Trail Overview

Hornet descends out the back forest of George Washington National Forest to Hawk Campground. Many dispersed campsites can also be found past the Hawk Recreation and Picnic area. The road down is mostly gravel with many washouts of clay and mud exposing ruts and rocks. This is a scenic and secluded area of George Washington National Forest with many hiking, biking, horseback riding, and hunting opportunities. When dry, the road can be traversed in 2WD, but if storms are in the forecast, 4WD is recommended to climb out.

Difficulty

The road down is mostly gravel with many washouts of clay and mud exposing ruts and rocks. Access to this area is closed in February, March and April.
