Trail Overview

This route travels from just outside Thomas, WV connecting back to WV 48. The route is not well maintained and has varying terrain. Mud and natural rock make up the base with some small washes and ledges throughout. Several small stream crossings with flow dependent on recent weather. Multiple scenic views of the canyon along the route with a nice viewpoint as listed on the map on a rock outcropping. Dispersed camping sites can be found along the route. The Olson Fire tower offers 360 degree views of the surrounding area.

Pretty bumpy in a 3/4 ton truck but manageable with some tire deflation. Two slightly challenging sections depending on vehicle. The washout with culverts was pretty straight forward. The other washout has two paths. One path straight through that requires a higher break over angle vehicle. The other bypasses that, but is rougher and goes better with a spotter when in a long full size rig. Pictures don’t show very well - that washout is about 4ft deep. Mostly open otherwise with just a few spots that may cause light scratches. Not very muddy, just lots of water puddles. Be sure to stop for the overlook!
