Trail Overview
The Saddle Mountains Rim Tour trail offers a scenic off-road adventure with sweeping views of the Columbia Basin. This route features a mix of sandy washes, rocky climbs, and ridgeline trails, making it a fun challenge for high-clearance 4x4s. Spring brings vibrant wildflowers, while fall offers cooler temps and clear skies. Be prepared for wind at the top, and always check conditions, as the trail can get rutted after rain. The area is also known for its abundance of petrified wood, with scattered pieces found along the hillsides and washes. Rockhounds can legally collect small amounts for personal use, making this a great spot for both off-roaders and fossil enthusiasts.

History
The Saddle Mountains near Mattawa, Washington, are a rugged basalt ridge formed by ancient volcanic activity and shaped over millions of years by erosion and Ice Age floods. Part of the Columbia River Basalt Group, the mountains were created by massive lava flows around 15 million years ago. During the last Ice Age, cataclysmic floods from Glacial Lake Missoula carved deep channels and exposed layers of rock, leaving behind the dramatic landscapes seen today. The region is also rich in petrified wood, remnants of ancient forests that thrived here before being buried and fossilized by volcanic ash. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Wanapum, who lived along the Columbia River and relied on its resources for fishing, hunting, and trade. In the 20th century, the region became known for agriculture and hydroelectric projects, with the nearby Columbia River providing irrigation and power. Today, the Saddle Mountains remain a popular destination for off-roading, rockhounding, and exploring the unique geological history of central Washington.
