Trail Overview

0Iron Mountain Spur B is a 6-mile single-track trail running northeast of Spur A through Jefferson National Forest, connecting Feathercamp Road to the west and Whitetop Road to the east. The trail is open to motorcycles, mountain bikes, hikers, and horseback riders -- expect to encounter all of them. Pull-off parking is available at both the Whitetop Road and Feathercamp entrances, giving you flexibility to start from either end. Like its neighbor, Spur B is a true point-to-point: stage a vehicle or plan a return route before you head in. The surface is a technical single track with a mix of dirt, mud, rock, and wet ruts that hold water long after the rain stops. Dense foliage lines the lower sections, and the trail winds through steep forest with tight turns that can punish riders who get ahead of themselves. What sets Spur B apart is the payoff at the midpoint -- the forest opens up to long-range mountain views that stop you in your tracks before the trail drops back into the trees. Storm damage is evident throughout, with downed trees cleared to just enough clearance to pass. In one section, the clearance drops so low that getting through requires laying your bike on its side and pulling it underneath. Come prepared for that kind of problem-solving. No permits required. Expect no cell service on the trail.

Difficulty

This trail has wet ruts and a rocky surface that keeps you working the whole way through, and the tight turns combined with the grade throughout leave little room to recover from a bad line. The storm damage adds a wildcard element -- obstacles change with conditions, and some clearances are tight enough to require manhandling your bike through. The long-range views at the midpoint are worth every bit of it, but this trail demands full attention from start to finish.
