Trail Overview

Two Pipe Springs-BLM16260 is a 15.7-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located in Garfield County. Two Pipe Springs runs the length of "The Big Ridge", starting in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCNRA), ending at the Happy Canyon trail, which continues west where it ends at Buckacre Point. The hard-packed dirt, sandstone rock, and patches of high desert sand trail can be accessed within the Orange Cliffs Zone of the GCNRA near the Flint Trail Overlook by any vehicle, or alternatively, if riding on a 50" or less vehicle, it can be accessed via Simplot Dugway. This entire area is popular with canyoneering enthusiasts and hikers, with multiple slot canyons in the area. The National Parks Service recommends high clearance 4WD vehicles in the Maze District as roads are steep and due to a clay composite, can be slippery in wet conditions. As the trail progresses west from the trailhead, the terrain changes as it descends onto the Big Ridge plateau. An old BLM airstrip is located 9.5 miles from the trailhead. Backcountry flyers still use this airstrip today for recreational activities. At about 10.8 miles, the trail intersects Happy Canyon Trail, which runs north and meets back up at the end of Two Pipe Springs trail, making for a loop back on the plateau. Cell phone service may be available on the very western end of the plateau, but travelers should not expect service in this remote area. The nearest services are located in Hanksville.
