Trail Overview

Twister is a 1.6-mile point-to-point trail rated 9 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area. Although usually referred to as Sand Hollow this is not part of the state park but managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This trail is for highly skilled drivers looking for extremely challenging terrain. Named for tight off-camber turns and climbs where the only straight section is between obstacles. The trailhead is located right off the Lakeside (fenceline) trail for easy access and difficult recovery. If you struggle with the gatekeeper obstacle, you should probably turn around and try a different trail. Most of the obstacles on this trail are unnamed for a simple reason, there are too many to keep track of with more than 30 obstacles this trail will meet most driver's adrenaline requirements. Right from the start, you're faced with off-camber head games and multiple tight spots requiring precise tire placement right along the edge of moderate-sized cliff edges. The trail continues to wind up some exciting waterfalls, multiple wedges, and a couple walls that a vehicle shouldn't be able to drive up and over. Dubbed the "Happy Ending" is a hill that messes with anyone's mind as there is a straight drop-off on the driver's side making the moderately challenging climb feel much worse than it really is. Body damage is likely - full-bodied vehicles beware. This trail is used during most major events on the mountain and draws those willing to take the risk for the ultimate reward. Cell phone service is generally good and the nearest services are located in Hurricane.
