Trail Overview

Left Fork Rhodes Canyon (FS 70151) is a forest road running west to east, connecting Silver Meadows (FS 70174) to Rhodes Canyon (FS 10174). It passes through a mix of healthy and fire-damaged pine groves with several dispersed campsites along the way. The first mile and a half from the west end is relatively flat and wide enough for about a vehicle and a half, with a surface of gravel and dirt that remains easy to drive compared to the rougher sections further east. Evidence of the 2024 Yellow Lake Fire is visible early in the trail, with patches of burned timber still standing alongside areas of recovery. At about 1.6 miles from the west end, the road begins to narrow and grow rougher, with potholes, small mudholes, and embedded rocks. Some rocks are loose and up to the size of a softball, though most don't stick far above the road surface. By 1.7 miles, the trail includes larger puddles, fallen logs, and debris from the fire. At 2.0 miles, a short shelf road section appears on the south side of the trail, adding mild exposure. By 2.2 miles, the trail passes through a small valley with rocky slopes and shallow ruts that can hold mud after rain. Around 2.5 miles, the road descends on a narrow and rocky stretch with loose stones up to 6-8 inches in diameter. At 2.9 miles, a burned log blocks the original roadbed, but a clear bypass skirts around it to the north. Near 3 miles, the trail continues with a rocky descent where larger stones line the south side of the road. Signs in this area indicate that firewood harvesting is not permitted.
