Layout - FR 70246

Trail Overview

This hidden gem of a trail winds up and down over the mountains, through pine forests, aspens, and alpine meadows. The scenery is majestic. Because Layout is less used than other trails in the area, it may be a good road to look for wildlife. There is a section of the road, a little over half a mile to the east of Racetrack (FR 70740), where the trail splits into two parallel paths. The path to the north appears to be the original trail that has suffered some severe trail erosion with very deep ruts. The path to the south simply runs alongside the path to the north. The southern path is a smooth and easy ride, but tall grass may obscure the way onto this option.

Difficulty

Starting on the southwestern side of the Layout, trail conditions are fairly smooth with a very steep, narrow, and high shelf road. Conditions change past the connection to Racetrack (FR 70740). Expect sections with more loose rocks and very deep ruts nearly two feet deep. While Layout is open to all vehicles, there are some parts where the trail can become pretty narrow for full-sized off-road vehicles. Trees and branches may also obstruct the trail.
