Trail Overview

Gold Springs Road is a 12-mile point-to-point trail rated 2 of 10 located in Iron County, Utah. Gold Springs Road is a primary access road into the Gold Strike mining district. There are multiple mines located along the road leading up to the Jennie Mine on the north end of the road. Most of the road is a compacted dirt double-track road suitable for all types of vehicles. Most of the side trails require a minimum high clearance 2WD vehicles. Trail access is from Highway 56 just west of Modena. Driving north on Gold Springs Road is a continual slow-grade climb of nearly 1300 feet. Sites to see along Gold Springs Road are an old ore chute and a miner's cabin. At the miner's cabin, the shaft and headframe are in the back of the cabin. There are multiple trails that can be accessed at the end of Gold Spring Road that will lead to various mines within the Fey Mining District. Most of the town buildings in the desert here at this higher elevation have fallen or been bulldozed. A little looking will reveal several piles of wood from former structures. The great financial panic of 1907 destroyed the mining operation at Gold Springs and by 1910 the area was all but deserted. Mining rebounded around 1917 and continued to produce, at least sporadically, into the 1940s. Cell phone service is intermittent. The nearest services are located in Panaca, Nevada 25 miles west, and Newcastle, Utah 25 miles east of the trailhead.
