Trail Overview

This stunning Shelf Road provides fantastic views of the surrounding Manti-La Sal National Forest. It connects the wonderful campsites on the plateau with the red rock canyons that surround it, offering visitors a unique and relaxing drive. The route is fairly well maintained, but mud and snow can make things difficult or even impassable under the right conditions. I've personally had to winch downhill on this section during winter months when the snows were deep enough. Cell service is spotty at best, but camping is plentiful and there are a few sites right on the cliffside offering excellent views. Large vehicles and vehicles with trailers should consider alternate routes and do research before attempting this section. There are one or two switchbacks that are tight enough to pose problems. Specifically, the corner which I have included as a screenshot.

Difficulty

This is a fairly straightforward dirt road with some tight switchbacks. Mud and snow can become an issue and make the trail impassable.
