East Side - BLM 74

Trail Overview

Located just off Highway 9, BLM 74 - East is a spectacularly scenic 3.1-mile two-track adventure that meanders across an elevated bluff through vibrant, high-desert upland scrub. The journey begins by passing through an unlocked access gate directly off the highway; as always, please practice proper trail etiquette by securely closing the gate behind you to protect the local lands. As you navigate the winding red-dirt path, you will be treated to numerous flat, spacious, dispersed campsites situated directly along the bluff's rim. These premier, secluded clearings offer absolutely breathtaking, panoramic vantage points looking steeply down into the famous Barracks Trail canyon below. However, explorers must be acutely aware that portions of this backcountry track are heavily overgrown with stiff desert brush and juniper branches. If you are driving a mid-size or full-size vehicle, aggressive pinstriping along the sides of your rig is absolutely guaranteed. This trail provides an incredible, immersive, and rugged escape into the backcountry, perfectly suited for those who do not mind some minor scratches on their clear coat.

BLM 74 - East earns a solid Level 2 Easy rating. The physical surface of the trail consists of an unmaintained red-dirt two-track featuring moderately uneven erosion ruts and patches of bumpy, embedded rocks. While the trail fundamentally lacks extreme off-camber washouts or severe rock-crawling ledges, a vehicle with adequate ground clearance is highly recommended to comfortably navigate the bumps. However, the primary challenge of this route is the dense, encroaching vegetation. Because the track is exceptionally narrow in parts, standard AWD crossovers, stock SUVs, and full-size trucks will inevitably suffer guaranteed pinstriping from the tough upland scrub. Proceed only if you are completely comfortable with brush contact.
