Trail Overview
Death Row is an 8-rated 2-mile point-to-point trail with high intensity located within the Sand Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This trail, first introduced in 2025, offers a mix of technical, steep, and off-camber obstacles. Found on the south end of the OHV area in the vicinity of the iconic Flintstone House, it weaves its way through multiple sandstone rock formations. Many of the obstacles require fairly precise tire placement. From the trailhead, the initial trail approach is a simple sand track, but soon approaches the first major obstacle, "Jury Box," with a deep sand approach and turns into a steep, slick rock climb. Momentum will be the key to successfully negotiating this obstacle. The trail will progress through a series of additional slick rock climbs and sand tracks. As the trail transitions around the next rock formation, it approaches the next obstacle. "Lethal Injection" is a slickrock steep two-step climb into a V-notch exit. Stay high, driver crossing the notch, and make sure your driver's rear gets up on the wall to prevent sliding in and incurring some body damage. Make sure you stay on the wall all the way through to level ground. As soon as you exit "Lethal Injection," the trail does a 180-degree passenger turn as it approaches a 40-foot slick rock climb with a pretty nice undercut lip at the top. This is "Plead Insanity." The trail will then transition through several more slick rock areas and past the iconic "Flintstone House." The trail then approaches the last section of slick rock and the obstacle "Electric Chair," a driver's approach to another V-notch climb. The final series of obstacles at the end of the trail in combination are called "Green Mile." In all this trail offers difficult obstacles, great views, and sets the standards for a solid 8-rated trail. Cell phone service was generally good, and the nearest services are in Hurricane.
