Trail Overview
Chutes and Ladders is about a half-mile point-to-point trail rated 9 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Off-Highway Vehicle Area. Although usually referred to as Sand Hollow this is not part of the state park but managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This trail is for highly skilled drivers looking for extremely challenging terrain. This trail starts within 100 yards of the paved road leading to the parking lot. As the name implies and just like the game this trail offers big climbs and big drops. Many of the obstacles have alternate obstacles alongside from which to choose. This does not mean that there are bypasses, just different obstacles to get to the same spot. This is why many who run this trail do so twice just to hit the alternative lines. Getting up the gatekeeper is the first challenge that many fail. There is a bypass, however, it doesn't get any easier. After completing the gatekeeper there is a sandy wash with some minor obstacles to negotiate, don't let this fool you, the best is yet to come. As you approach the big rocks in front of you there is a 6' steep waterfall to negotiate. This is followed by big steps, wall-washing cracks, and a final waterfall to get you to the top. But wait, there's more. The trail loops back 180 degrees to the driver's side and then goes back down the other side of the rocks. Again, there are options on which line to take, either the high road or the low road, they both lead back to the same spot. This trail is for extremely well-built rigs and full body rigs may incur damage. You can expect to have cell service full time and the nearest services are located in Hurricane.
