Trail Overview

McGath Point Overlook Trail begins just off Hell's Backbone Road near Highway 12 and offers a winding, forested ride into some of the most scenic terrain in southern Utah. This 10-mile out-and-back trail combines smooth, forest-lined travel with light technical elements, all leading to an incredible 270-degree panoramic view of the Phipps Death Hollow Wilderness Study Area at the trail's end. The route winds through dense cedar trees and passes the Boulder Mail Trailhead, with occasional views into the Phipps Death Hollow Wilderness Study Area. The surface varies between hard-packed dirt with small rocks and stretches of soft sand, particularly in the latter half of the trail. While mostly smooth, drivers should expect a few off-camber sections, some rutted areas, and a couple of short rock drop-offs that require careful tire placement. The trail's character is defined by its tight, winding nature and its mix of forested serenity and striking desert views. It's an ideal trail for those seeking solitude, scenery, and a bit of mild adventure off the beaten path.

Difficulty

This trail is mostly easygoing, with smooth dirt and sandy sections, but includes some mild off-camber areas, minor ruts, and a few short rock ledges that add a touch of technical driving. It is best suited for high-clearance vehicles, and 4WD is recommended, especially in wet conditions when the dirt can become slick. Drivers should be prepared for shifting surfaces and tight forest curves, but overall, the route is accessible to most off-roaders with a bit of experience.
