Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Chimney Rock Cutoff is a rugged connector route that provides a direct and scenic approach from the Long Point Ridge Foothills area to the Spirit Railroad Complex. The trail winds across open desert terrain with expansive views before gradually bringing you closer to the striking formation of Chimney Rock, offering a rewarding perspective without committing to the more difficult routes that lead directly to its base. This makes it a great option for those looking to experience the landmark while keeping the drive manageable. The surface is a mix of dirt and sand with several washouts along the way, especially when approaching from the Green River Cutoff side. These eroded sections can be uneven and require careful tire placement, adding to the overall rugged feel of the trail. High clearance is strongly recommended, and a capable 4x4 vehicle will make the drive significantly more comfortable and controlled. History

Chimney Rock has long served as a natural landmark within the San Rafael Swell, guiding travel across the open desert terrain for generations. While the surrounding area holds evidence of much older Indigenous presence, the routes near Chimney Rock were later used by ranchers, explorers, and early travelers navigating between remote sections of the Swell. The nearby Spirit Railroad Complex reflects a more recent chapter of human activity in the area, tying the landscape to transportation and industrial efforts that passed through this rugged region. Today, these trails follow many of those same paths, offering access to both the geologic features and layered history that define this part of central Utah.
