Trail Overview

BLM 61 serves as a prominent 3.6-mile backcountry spine trail accessed directly off Highway 89, plunging explorers straight into the scenic heart of the high desert. Earning its notorious local nickname as "Washboard City," this heavily tracked route consists almost entirely of vivid, exceptionally deep red sand that winds its way through a classic landscape of fragrant juniper trees and rugged desert scrub. While the vast, sweeping scenery is undeniably breathtaking under the cloudy skies, the journey itself is aggressively bumpy. The deeply rutted sandy tread is plagued by relentless, never-ending washboards that will severely test your vehicle's suspension over the entire transit. Along the way, the trail encounters various forks and junctions, weaving fluidly through a mix of public lands and private parcels. Explorers must remain highly observant and strictly respect the boundaries, as prominently displayed signs clearly mark the public road passing through private property, explicitly requesting respect and prohibiting any hunting.

Difficulty

BLM 61 earns a solid Level 2 Easy technical rating entirely due to its persistently deep, soft red sand and the relentless, high-frequency washboards that completely define the surface. The trail is completely devoid of extreme rock-crawling ledges, deep mud bogs, or technical off-camber washouts. However, safely and comfortably navigating this continuous "washboard city" practically requires significantly lowered tire pressures. Airing down not only provides essential flotation in the power-sapping sand but also vitally softens the aggressive, bone-rattling vibration of the bumps. A standard AWD crossover, stock SUV, or high-clearance 2WD truck can manage this route safely under standard dry conditions, provided the driver maintains steady, deliberate momentum.
