Trail Overview
BLM 42 is an exceptionally fast, fluid, and highly enjoyable 6.6-mile out-and-back backcountry two-track that perfectly showcases the wide-open beauty of Sethys Canyon. The distinctly smooth, soft red-sand path playfully winds its way through a vast, vibrant landscape heavily populated by thick, rustic sagebrush and scattered green juniper trees under a brilliant blue sky. Because the driving corridor is remarkably open and generally lacks tight, vehicle-scratching brush, explorers can confidently maintain a noticeably quicker, relaxed driving pace throughout the majority of the scenic transit. Along the journey, drivers will encounter a sturdy green metal cattle gate barring the trail, which must be carefully opened and securely closed behind you to properly respect the grazing boundaries. The highly engaging route eventually begins to peter out and fade as it directly reaches the dense, encroaching forest line. At this peaceful terminus, travelers can choose to complete the full out-and-back transit or simply backtrack to successfully connect with the nearby BLM 43 trail.

Difficulty
BLM 42 firmly earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating, driven entirely by a specific, high-consequence obstacle found along the otherwise fast and easy-rolling route. While the vast majority of the sandy track is notably smooth, drivers are abruptly forced to carefully negotiate a distinctly steep, deeply rutted drop into a remarkably soft sandy ravine, immediately followed by a demanding climb back out. To successfully power through this severely soft, shifting obstacle without losing critical forward momentum or hopelessly bogging down in the deep ruts, a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is absolutely required. Furthermore, significantly lowering your tire air pressures before hitting the trail is strictly necessary to maximize your essential flotation and ensure reliable traction on the steep incline.
