Trail Overview

BLM 103B is a highly enjoyable, 1.3-mile backcountry sandy two-track that provides a wonderfully relaxed and straightforward transit through the high desert. Unlike some of the tighter, heavily restricted paths in the surrounding network, this gently rolling route features excellent, wide-open sight lines that allow drivers to see far ahead over the vibrant landscape. The remarkably vivid red-sand trail playfully meanders past scattered groves of mature green juniper trees and thick, rustic sagebrush under a brilliant, cloud-dotted sky. As the track gracefully crests over gentle rises and dips through shallow sandy hollows, off-roaders are treated to sweeping, picturesque views of the distant rugged plateaus. It is a highly pleasant, fast-paced drive that perfectly balances stunning desert scenery with a smooth, fluid driving rhythm.

Difficulty

BLM 103B comfortably earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating. The trail is generally characterized by a smooth, easy rolling surface that is completely devoid of severe rock-crawling ledges, intimidating off-camber washouts, or exceptionally tight, overgrown chicanes. The primary and only real obstacle on this brief 1.3-mile route is the distinctly deep, remarkably soft red sand that makes up the two-track. To safely maintain a steady forward momentum and prevent bogging down in the deep ruts, a high-clearance 4x4 or AWD vehicle is highly recommended. Lowering your tire air pressures before hitting the sand will vastly improve essential flotation, increase overall traction, and provide a much softer ride over the desert bumps.
