Trail Overview
Chispa Road is a long, remote backcountry route in the Big Bend region of West Texas, located west of Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The route passes through several distinct desert landscapes, beginning in barren rocky terrain near Van Horn before transitioning into tighter two-track sections with denser vegetation and eventually opening into dramatic scenery filled with large rock formations, mesas, and high bluffs near the Rio Grande. In certain sections, the road runs very close to the river, offering expansive views and an isolated feel throughout the drive. Along the way, drivers will encounter multiple dips, wet weather creeks, a gate that must be opened and closed, and the small community of Candelaria before the route reconnects with pavement.

Difficulty
On this road, you'll find a mostly maintained dirt and gravel surface with rocky sections, shallow creek crossings, loose terrain, and occasional steep draws throughout the route. In dry conditions, the road is generally straightforward and manageable for most trucks and higher-clearance crossovers with no major technical obstacles. One creek crossing along the route can hold significant water after rain, with surrounding sections turning into deep mud that can remain soft and difficult for extended periods. Wet weather creeks throughout the trail can also change conditions quickly after storms. While much of the route is maintained, washouts, muddy sections, and uneven terrain can still require careful driving and proper traction. 4x4 is recommended, especially during or after wet weather. Overall, this road is easy to moderate in dry conditions but can become significantly more difficult after rain.
