Trail Overview

Agua Fria Road is a scenic backcountry dirt road just outside Terlingua that winds through classic Chihuahuan Desert terrain. The route is primarily compact dirt with occasional loose rock and sandy patches, making it an enjoyable and straightforward drive in dry conditions. As you travel the road, you'll be treated to expansive desert views with Agua Fria Mountain rising prominently in the distance. The route gently weaves through rolling desert landscape and crosses several dry creek beds (arroyos). These crossings are typically shallow but can become rougher or washed out after heavy rains. Agua Fria Road also serves as a gateway to several other fun backroads in the area, making it a great connector route for building a longer desert exploration day.

Agua Fria Road is suitable for most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. The surface is primarily maintained dirt with light washboarding, small loose rock sections, and shallow dry creek crossings.
