Trail Overview
FS 231 is a well-maintained Forest Service road that acts more like a scenic backbone through this part of the Black Hills. Graded and wide enough for two vehicles in most places, it's the kind of road you can cruise without stressing your rig -- but it's also the gateway to deeper adventure. Several spurs break off along the way, including access to Camp Five, Bombard Draw, and other less-traveled routes that climb into the hills or dip into thick drainages. This is a good reset road between tougher trails -- or the perfect lead-in if you're scouting for dispersed camping, game sign, or loop routes. Expect steady grades, mixed pine stands, and solid gravel over a limestone base that drains well. You'll see some traffic, especially in season, but it still feels remote enough to catch wildlife in the early hours. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.

Difficulty
If plowed during the winter, this wide two-lane gravel road is a wonderful connector to other parts of the forest.
