Trail Overview

County Line Road is a scenic off-road route that traces the boundary between Charleston and Dorchester counties. This backcountry road features a mix of sand, red clay, and gravel surfaces, offering varied terrain that changes with the weather. When dry, sections can become extremely dusty. After heavy rain, the red clay turns slick and can make travel challenging, especially for less-experienced drivers. The area is remote with poor cell service and very little traffic, making it a peaceful alternative route for those exploring the Lowcountry. Wildlife is common along this stretch, so be alert for deer and wild turkeys crossing without warning. County Line Road is a valuable bypass option on the South Carolina Adventure Route when flooding at the Edisto River renders the Parkers Ferry segment impassable. Though not technically difficult in dry conditions, the road demands attention in wet weather or when visibility is reduced due to dust. Ideal for 4WD and SxS vehicles, this road offers a rugged but rewarding detour through the rural borderlands of two counties.
