Trail Overview

The West Rim Road in Toga and Tiadaghton State Forests runs North/South on the ridge tops West of the Pine Creek Gorge. The Southern access is a few short miles from the Petty Coat Junction (PCJ) Campground in Cedar Run, PA, on Route 414. The Campground is included on the Mid Atlantic Back Road Discovery Route (MABDR) as the end of Section #8 and the start of the final Section #9, which includes the West Rim Road. The Northern access is South of Scenic Route 6 (PA WILDS) and Ansonia Pa at the Colton Point State Park Vista. The Route is a multipurpose access road; Please observe "Ride Right" rules as there are Gravel/Mountain cyclists, Dual Sport motorcycles, ADV Motorcycles, Cars, Jeeps, and Trucks, and logging Vehicles using the road. Like other state-established hiking trails, the West Rim Hiking Trail crisscrosses the West Rim Road. The Habitat is diverse, and Black bears, Timber Rattlers, Beavers, White Tail Deer, Bobcats, Grouse, and other creatures call the forest home. Multiple Vistas overlook the Gorge (Pennsylvania Grand Canyon). The Fora is a maturing state forest that is well maintained, and there are opportunities along the West Rim Road to read about how the forest is managed.

Difficulty

Dirt and Gravel road that is safe for 2WD Vehicles. Road is wide and pulls offs are many.

History

In the late 1800's the entire forests of Tioga, Tiadaghton, Susquehannock and Sproul were deforested, by Farmers and Forest Barons for the Lumber, Charcoal, and Chemicals. The Pine Creek and The Pine Creek Rail trail were instrumental in moving the goods "down River" for processing and distribution.

Access Description

The Southern Access is off of Route 414 in Cedar Run Pa. Just South from Blackwell Pa.The Northern access is South of Route 6 on Colton Point Road, out side Ansonia Pa. The Colton Point road leads to the Colton Pont State Park, then Painter Leetonia Road (dirt) finally intersecting with the West Rim Road.
