Trail Overview
Cattaraugus Road is a typical Pennsylvania forest service road. During the winter, it is also a joint-use snowmobile trail, so be aware of that when snow is on the ground. The rest of the year, it's a gravel road that offers entry into this remote part of the forest from the east. The forest service road network in this part of the forest is very scenic, with lots of opportunities to pull off and picnic or relax. As with a lot of Sproul State Forest, this is a remote area with spotty cell service and limited opportunities to provision. The closest gas, food, etc., is in Renovo. Plan accordingly. The road offers access to some hiking trails and has a spur called Short Bend Trail, which is a short loop that offers access to a dispersed motorized campsite. As with all Pennsylvania camp sites, a reservation on Reserve America is required. Note that Short Bend may not be accessible for vehicles without high clearance and 4WD when wet, muddy, or snowy. The road crosses a power line cut through the forest. The service roads are only for the utility company and are gated. Please do not try to drive around the gates.
